Mac ports and connections — USB, Thunderbolt, HDMI, SD and headphone jack not working
Last updated:
Quick answer
Port issues are either dirty ports (solvable with compressed air) or faulty port controllers on the logic board. We can replace individual ports without swapping the entire logic board — typically DKK 1,800-2,800 per port.

Why doesn't USB work?
Test first: 1) another USB device in the same port — does it work? 2) The same device in a different port — does it work there? 3) Restart the Mac. 4) NVRAM reset (Intel) or hard restart (Apple Silicon). 5) If only one port is dead, that port's controller is faulty. We can replace it.
Why doesn't USB-C work?
Most common cause: lint in the port. Shine an LED flashlight into the port and clean with compressed air. Never use metal. If clean and still faulty: check whether only power works, or whether data also fails. A faulty USB-C controller costs DKK 1,800-2,800 to replace at our shop.
Why doesn't Thunderbolt work?
Thunderbolt shares the USB-C connector but requires the Thunderbolt controller on the logic board. Test with a regular USB-C accessory first — if that works, but Thunderbolt accessories don't, it's the Thunderbolt controller. This is typically a complex repair (micro-soldering) — contact us.
Why doesn't HDMI work?
On the MacBook Pro 14-inch/16-inch, the HDMI port is direct; on Air and Pro 13-inch, you'll be using a USB-C-to-HDMI adapter. Check: 1) the adapter supports DisplayPort Alt Mode (cheap charging cables do NOT), 2) the HDMI cable and the display work, 3) on USB-C: try a different port. Faulty HDMI port: contact us.
Why doesn't the SD card work?
SD card readers are only on the MacBook Pro 14-inch/16-inch. Check: 1) the card isn't write-protected (small tab on the edge), 2) the card is formatted as FAT/ExFAT for compatibility, 3) the card works in another reader. If only your Mac fails, it's the SD controller — replacement at our shop.
Why doesn't the headphone jack work?
1) Check audio output in the menu bar — are headphones selected? 2) Test with another set of headphones. 3) Listen for a small click when you insert them (that's the switch detecting insertion). 4) If no click, the jack may be dirty (wipe with an isopropyl Q-tip) or faulty — contact us.
